Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel FAQs | Caltex Hong Kong

Answers to your questions on

What is Techron® Concentrate Plus?

Techron Concentrate Plus is an advanced fuel additive that helps clean fuel injectors, intake valves and combustion chambers with just one treatment.  The result is a cleaner engine, which leads to better performance, lower emissions and restored fuel economy.  The exclusive formulation of Techron Concentrate Plus is based on polyetheramine (PEA) chemistry, and delivers unsurpassed fuel system cleaning.

Why should I use Techron® Concentrate Plus, the fuel system cleaner?

Techron Concentrate Plus is for you if:

  • you drive an older vehicle, which has a spark ignition or hybrid engine
  • are uncertain about your vehicle’s fuel history
  • use inferior-quality fuel once in a while
  • often drive in severe conditions, for example; with frequent stop-and-go driving

How does Techron® Concentrate Plus compare to other bottled fuel additives?

Techron® Concentrate Plus is a Complete Fuel System Cleaner and is unsurpassed in cleaning the entire fuel system in one tankful.  Techron® Concentrate Plus has been used by OEMs worldwide to solve deposit-related problems. We regularly evaluate competitive products to ensure that Techron® Concentrate Plus continues to deliver unsurpassed fuel system cleaning. And, with one of the most concentrated formulas available, you can be rest assured that Techron® Concentrate Plus can do everything it claims.

How often should Techron® Concentrate Plus be used?

Techron® Concentrate Plus should be used every 5,000 kilometres or at every oil change.

How do I use Techron® Concentrate Plus?

Simply pour a bottle into your nearly empty fuel tank. Then fill up as you normally would. Techron® Concentrate Plus works in one tankful.

If I already use Caltex with Techron fuel, do I need to use Techron® Concentrate Plus as well?

If you are using a high-quality gasoline such as Caltex with Techron® exclusively, you do not need Techron® Concentrate Plus. However, if you occasionally fill up with lower quality gasoline, Techron® Concentrate Plus can help clean up deposits that can form over time.  In addition, if you have an engine that is sensitive to deposit formation, or if your vehicle is regularly used under severe conditions, you may benefit from using Techron® Concentrate Plus.

How does Techron® Concentrate Plus compare with aftermarket additives?

Techron® Concentrate Plus is proven to be superior to other aftermarket additives thanks to its significant amount of detergent that helps protect vital engine components.  Every year, competitor products are purchased by Chevron and broken down to their molecular level to be analyzed for their contents. Competitor products either completely lack or have very little of these important detergents that can remove harmful engine deposits.

Can a full bottle of Techron® Concentrate Plus be used in smaller fuel tanks?

If Techron® Concentrate Plus is used in smaller displacement engines, such as a motorcycle, you should not use the whole bottle. We recommend one ounce of Techron® Concentrate Plus for every gallon of fuel.

My car is knocking and pinging. What is causing this? Can Techron® Concentrate Plus help?

Knocking and pinging are generally caused by improper combustion in your engine. If the fuel-air mixture auto-ignites somewhere in the cylinder, the auto-ignition combustion wave can interact with the spark-initiated combustion wave, causing the vibration you hear as knock or ping. An increase in engine load, temperature, compression, spark-advance, air-fuel ratio and combustion chamber deposits all contribute to the tendency for an engine to knock. The use of higher octane fuel reduces this tendency. Deposits in the combustion chamber can increase you engine's appetite for octane by increasing the compression ratio. Fortunately, gasoline with Techron® minimises any contribution to potentially harmful combustion chamber deposits.

What is the difference between Caltex with Techron at the pump and Techron® Concentrate Plus in the bottle?

The principal difference is additive concentration and rate of deposit clean up. Chevron and Texaco gasolines with Techron® over multiple fill-ups will help clean deposits on intake valves and minimize harmful combustion chambers deposits. When added to a full tank of gasoline, a bottle of Techron® Concentrate Plus results in an additive concentration roughly 10 times stronger than Chevron and Texaco with Techron®. This mega-dose of Techron® provides a much quicker clean-up of intake valve deposits left by lower quality gasolines. In addition, the high concentration of Techron® reduces combustion chamber deposits, which can help eliminate deposit-related engine knock or power loss.

Is Techron® just a more diluted version of Techron® Concentrate Plus?

No. While both use a polyetheramine-based chemistry, each is optimized for its particular application. Chevron, Texaco and Caltex with Techron® helps clean engine deposits left by low quality gasolines and helps keep engines clean through regular use, while Techron® Concentrate Plus provides a quicker clean-up of deposits left by lower quality gasoline through higher additive dose optimised for fast cleanup.
