Five-day workshop drives personal enrichment and offers children keys to success.
SINGAPORE, 26 November, 2012 – People’s Association (PA), through its exclusive membership card, PAssion Card, joined forces with leading energy brand, Caltex to provide 80 students from low-income families with access to a specially created enrichment programme designed to equip them with life skills. The PA Kiddies programme, ‘Caltex PAssion for Kids: Drive for Success’ aims to inspire learning and give underprivileged children the opportunity to gain knowledge, develop new skills and be exposed to new ways of learning.
The ‘Caltex PAssion for Kids: Drive for Success’ is a five-day personal breakthrough and self-empowerment course designed and conducted by MindChamps, an international award-winning mind development institute. The PA Kiddies programme will culminate with a graduation ceremony on 27 November 2012. Attendees of the graduation ceremony will also include Guest-of-Honour, Ms Ellen Lee, MP for Sembawang GRC (Woodlands).
Through their partnership with the PA, Caltex has worked to support Singapore’s continued focus on education as the key to social mobility and an important social leveler. “Caltex PAssion for Kids allows us to reach out to underprivileged students by providing them with exposure to premium motivational workshops that they would otherwise not have access to. We want to facilitate a potential paradigm shift in the way these students mentally approach their studies and life in general. This is our way of giving back to the community and we’re excited to explore opportunities to continue working with PA and MindChamps,” said John Sam, Caltex Retail Manager, Chevron Singapore.
Working directly with the five Community Development Councils (CDCs) in Singapore, the PA identified 80 Primary Five students through its network. The students, who were selected by criteria set by the Ministry of Education, are under the Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) and taking standard subjects in their schools.
The participants will partake in a series of team-building and lecture-styled activities designed to help them go through a self-reflection journey, enabling the preteens to shift their social focus from ‘self’ to ‘others’. This process helps them to overcome mental barriers to academic and social success.
“This is the first time the PA and its PAssion card members collaborated with Caltex to bring joy to needy children in Singapore. Through the PA Kiddies programme, these children will have the opportunity to pursue their passion, and along the way develop strong friendships with each other,” added Ms Toh Lay Hoon, Director (Lifeskills and Lifestyle), PA.
As part of fund raising efforts, $1 from every $50 of petrol pumped was donated towards the programme through a donation drive held by Caltex between April to May 2012. A total of $60,000 was raised to fund the workshop.
Matching Caltex’s fund raising efforts, MindChamps is contributing $60,000 in-kind sponsorship to the programme; providing their leading trainers and designing the curriculum. MindChamps’ Assistant Director of International Corporate Communications, Mr Christopher Minjoot, said, “MindChamps is committed to lifting the standard of education and social responsibility of this generation of students for the future of our nation. We are indeed delighted to contribute our expertise to nurture the young minds of children who would normally not have the opportunity to receive such training.”
