Caltex Launches Initiative to Encourage Reading and Learning for Under-privileged ChildrenSupport for the Boys and Girls Clubs Association to Drive Book Donations for Caltex Learning Activity Corner

(Hong Kong, 3rd September, 2012) – From 3rd September, 2012, Caltex will join forces with The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) to hold a charity Book Drive with the goal of collecting books for the “Caltex Learning Activity Corner” and providing children from disadvantaged backgrounds with the means to learn and explore their full potential. The initiative brings the brand’s ‘Enjoy the Journey’ philosophy to encourage Hong Kongers to enjoy every step of their life’s journey, and also reinforces the company’s commitment to give back to the community.

Collection boxes for “Caltex Learning Activity Corner – Book Drive” will be available at twelve designated service stations. From now until 14th October, 2012, Hong Kongers may bring books or donations for the BGCA Book Drive to the twelve service stations. All proceeds will go towards establishing the “Caltex Learning Activity Corner” in BGCA’s new facility in Sha Tin. The BGCA will dedicate the space to books related to STEM knowledges (namely Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). For every donation of $100, three books will be added to the learning corner, or provide five children from low-income families with a range of learning activities. In addition, Caltex will be holding a charity car-wash in October where all proceeds, including operating expenses will be donated to the Caltex Learning Activity Corner. Details will be announced at a later date.

The BGCA Book Drive reinforces Caltex’s commitment to community service, providing children with important knowledge in STEM to learn about the world. As a socially responsible corporation, Caltex believes it has a role to play in cultivating and nurturing the future leaders of society and, in particular, helping children from underprivileged families. Give them more opportunities to build extra-curricular knowledge, develop their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

The “Caltex Learning Activity Corner” targets BGCA members from age six to eighteen.  Membership and activities fees for children from low-income families will be waived. BGCA will also offer a variety of learning materials, books and on-line information on STEM-related topics, as well as organise learning activities, educational outreach activities and competitions.

Over the years, Caltex has participated and organised a number of social service activities in the hope of contributing to a better society and giving back to the community. Caltex staff has organised a volunteer team and provided them an opportunity to contribute to the society so that they can feel proud to be part of a socially responsible company. Through participation in a range of social programmes, Caltex hopes to extend its support to different disadvantaged groups, providing resources, opportunities and necessary experience to those in need.
