Community Partnership

A part of the community

Chevron, the company behind the Caltex brand, has committed to making social investments in our host communities to address pressing socio-economic issues. This helps us build a deeper relationship and greater trust with the communities where we operate.

Several of Chevron’s social investments programs in South Africa have received various local and international awards for community relations. Together with our partners, we support programs that address human needs, enhance education, protect the environment, and help small businesses.

Intervention with Microfinance for AIDS and Gender Equity (IMAGE)

The Intervention with Microfinance for AIDS & Gender Equity (IMAGE) is a community-centered programme that combines micro-financing with a gender and HIV training curriculum called Sisters for Life. IMAGE is the first intervention globally to conclusively demonstrate that by addressing poverty and economic inequalities the physical and sexual abuse of women can be curtailed. More than 25,000 women in Gauteng, North West Province and Limpopo have improved their circumstances economically, materially and psychologically.

We invest in skills and apprenticeship training in Cape Town in the Western Cape. A collaborative initiative with four other partners, namely: Northlink College, Empro Training Services, the South African Oil and Gas Alliance and the Chemicals Industries Education and Training Authority. The programme trains a number of men and women in basic skills annually, who then have the potential of being employed during the annual safety and maintenance inspection at the refinery when additional capacity is required as well as enabling these communities to better empower themselves by becoming more employable.

Health

Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation

We are a funding partner of the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation on a programme that offers over 2000 young people from Masiphumelele in the Western Cape, access to youth friendly health services. The centre also serves as a study and recreational facility for young people, as well as a skills and on-the-job training facility for six youth each year. This partnership with the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation has been ongoing for a number of years.

In collaboration with the North Star Alliance, a group of NGOs that provide public and primary healthcare services, we established a Roadside Wellness Clinic in Cato Ridge, Durban. The centre provides health services to truck drivers and forms part of the network of clinics operated by North Star Alliance across Southern Africa. Services include HIV counselling and testing, the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, TB screening, family planning and primary healthcare.

Education

Cape Town Science Centre

We have partnered with the Cape Town Science Centre to enhance Maths and Science learning for learners at 20 schools closely situated near the refinery.

Du Noon Primary School

As part of our ongoing relationship with the Du Noon community near the refinery, we funded the renovation and restocking of the Inkwenkwezi Secondary School Library in 2010. The success of this initiative was replicated for the Du Noon Primary School which benefits 1,000 learners annually. The library was launched in January 2012. Also included has been the installation of IT systems and processes, as well as the provision of audio-visual equipment. Approximately 2600 learners registered at the schools benefit from this facility.

At Caltex, we believe we have an important role to play in contributing to improve the quality of life in our local communities. Our Social Investment programs contribute to areas identified by the local community as having the most need. Education is our key focus as improving instruction in the key subjects of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and on helping provide the career and technical training that can lead to good-paying jobs. If people and communities are to thrive, nothing is more important than education and job training. That's why Caltex invests in education.

We prefer to undertake long-term partnerships rather than short-term sponsorships. If you meet our eligibility criteria, you may submit proposals to ZAQueries@chevron.com.
