Chevron Commits R51 Million to Help Fight HIV/Aids in South Africa

On 13 November 2008, Chevron launched a multi-million dollar three year partnership with The Global Fund and the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health.

Chevron has announced an unprecedented $30 million commitment to The Global Fund to help eradicate HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Over the next three years, $5 million will be distributed to each of the Global Fund selected programs in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Angola, Nigeria and South Africa.

In South Africa, the Western Cape Provincial Health Department received $5 million (R51 million) through our Global Fund contribution. This organization is working to strengthen and expand the province's HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) programs in terms of prevention, treatment and care.

South Africa and Southern Africa as a whole remain the epicenter of the global AIDS pandemic. According to the most recent World Health Organization report, less than one third (460,000 out of 1.7 million) of the people who need life-saving AIDS drugs today are currently receiving them. The Western Cape Provincial Health Department is working to improve these figures. In addition to expanding its HIV/AIDS treatment program, the Department plans to implement its Comprehensive Service Plan to improve access to quality health care, including the establishment of urban and rural health districts throughout the province.

By pooling the combined resources of Chevron, the Global Fund and the Western Cape Provincial Health Department, we believe we can make a significant difference in the lives of people in our community.
