Caltex Energy for Learning Resource Grants for Reading Recovery

Caltex is committed to Energy for Learning in the community and helping to ensure all New Zealand children have the same opportunity to learn to read and write. In partnership with Reading Recovery New Zealand, we have provided $70,000 for Caltex Energy for Learning Resource Grants to New Zealand primary schools. The Reading Recovery remedial reading programme was pioneered in New Zealand in the 1970s and is now used throughout the country. It is also used in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia, with remarkable success. Today, Reading Recovery operates in 67% of all New Zealand primary schools and is accessible to 76% of New Zealand six year olds through 1,100 specialist trained teachers. In 2007, 14% of the nation’s 6 year old population - 10,777 students - participated in Reading Recovery; more than 80% were able to return to the classroom with successful levels of reading and writing. More information on Reading Recovery is available at www.readingrecovery.co.nz

The Caltex Energy for Learning Resource Grant for Reading Recovery is a one off grant pool that supplies much-needed extra reading resources to students in the Reading Recovery programme. Through this grant Chevron has provided 230 individual schools with a $300 grant each. This partnership with Reading Recovery allows us to contribute in a meaningful and positive way to improving the lives of 10,000 six-year-old children who enter Reading Recovery annually.
